@William Patrick Fagan seriously??? are you the flash, speedy gonzales, roadrunner or Usain Bolt?? or are you just plain stupid? Did you see that the bus was blocking the view of the children crossing? The children came running and did not practice caution. No one could know there would be people crossing the road.

@adara yes and no, the first answer to the original comment was implying that is was an automated braking system, wich it was not. Secondly i love to drive volvoa but their brakes are nothing special, all european manufacturers get below the 40m brake test mark(80kmh) and differences get very small between the premium trucks so the volvo brakes saved the kid but mercedes, scania,MAN,daf, renault, iveco would have too.

This is what my Dad told me before, always slows down when the bus opposite you stop. Look for pedestrian and be ready. In Cars being low you can also look underneath the bus or lorry if there is a pedestrian behind it trying to cross. Thank God the driver was very alert and managed to control everything and prevented the accident from happening. So much respect for the driver of the Lorry. May God bless and protect you always.

Dropping down to walking speed as soon as you pass by a bus with blinking lights is taught in driving school here in Germany. Literally everyone here knows that you HAVE to reduce the speed and be ready to slam breaks when you're near a bus because of this exact reason that we saw in the video.

Whoever has invented the ABS, his invention is saving a lot of people.

    • Ahmad
      Ahmad Hace un mes

I'm not quite sure whether it's a German invention, Italian or French. Although a lot people consider (Wikipedia) as not a reliable source of knowledge, it has enough data about ABS (naming) , history and phases of it's development since the early 19th century (the concept was first applied on Rail Vehicles). Please have a look at it on Wiki.
As for VSC, it may have another universal naming that I'm not aware of. Maybe you're right. I can't question that.
I just have a TOYOTA Prado and it has an ABS and VSC that is shortened for Vehicle Stability Control. Thanks for your reply tho :)
And the TORSEN (center) diff lock it has which comes equipped from factory was a real deal breaker for me.

    • felleice
      felleice Hace un mes

@Ahmad VSC is not the term for it. ESP is the universal name for this saftey feature and is used by all car manufacturers worldwide. Electronic stabilization program

    • felleice
      felleice Hace un mes

@Increase incorrect, the inventor is called mario palazzi or something like that and worked for Fiat in italy. Bosch in germany then bought the patent and named it ABS. Italian invention patented by germans.

    • felleice
      felleice Hace un mes

@Ahmad ABS is german and standard for anti blocking system if you translate it Word for word. The german Word is anti blockier system and its a german invention.
ESP is the correct name for the electronic stabilisation program.
This name is universal for all cars.

This was going through my mind yesterday. Each week a huge bus pulls up outside the village school to take the children to swim practice. As I approached the rear end of the bus I suddenly remembered this Volvo truck video and immediately slowed right down. Although it was unlikely for a child to suddenly appear, I thought, better safe than sorry. The weird thing was how quickly the brain recalls some image, then reacts. I was only driving at about 15 mph towards the bus anyway and then when I thought "Volvo video" I dropped to 2 mph and crawled past.

Kudos to driver, kudos to Volvo, and kudos to other driver who pressed the horn, that was maximum he could do. In rare situations when someone goes through the red light by mistake (usually seeing the wrong part of the traffic light thinking he/she got green), I am always the only one using horn (in order to warn driver of the mistake, but also to attrtact more attention of the drivers going through the green light)

Great idea by the driver who sounded his horn. Amazing reactions by the driver of the on coming truck. Great breaks that allowed the truck to stop so fast. But what were those kids thinking!? and the bus driver letting them out there. And then they ambled away as if nothing had happened.

I know they are kids, but the stupidity is mind boggling..they probably do this route every day! Not one but two of them run across...and then casually walk away like nothing happened.

@keiichi maebara Holy moly you're pitying these kids too much and they don't even look 5. They older at least 7 and older, get a grip. I'll pity younger kids like 6 and under but over that nah. Im 15 and if I get ran over, I blame it all on myself.

@Dexter Sullen 'TRUTH' No, the clips are sold to media companies (LiveLeak being one of them) and so it's possible that had this clip contained a death/injury it would've been sold to a more explicit media company (like LiveLeak!) :)

@jothain I don't remember telling any anecdote. Anyway, it's good for you and your friends if you learned something from it. Keep that those that don't learn wouldn't be telling you an anecdote about a lesson they didn't learn.

    • jothain
      jothain Hace un año

@J. Cosio Judging from experience, almost certainly a rule. I've heard similar experiences from multiple other people. But noted, same applies to your anecdote. After all, near death event is in most cases a good lesson. If you die...

@jothain Now ask yourself, are you the exception or the rule? This is the problem with anecdotes as evidence.

Its like the first rule of crossing roads, look both sides and then cross. Never cross when a big vehicle is blocking your view of the road. People neglect simple rules and then the accidents happen. Kudos to the driver and the brake manufacturer.
