  • Quebec is putting its foot down on the unvaccinated, with Premier François Legault saying people who refuse to get immunized against COVID-19 will soon have to pay a health-care tax. Mike Armstrong looks at the potentially steep price some Quebecers could face and how experts are reacting.

As Omicron rages, anxiety is rising before students in Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia resume in-person learning on January 17. Eric Sorensen looks at the risks and rewards of kids returning to the classroom.

With nearly half of its residents infected with COVID-19, the remote Bearskin Lake First Nation needs help, but it's not getting what it wants from the federal government. And as David Akin reports, neighbours are pitching in to help.

In the United Kingdom, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is facing more national fury, amid another accusation government staff held a party that defied pandemic protocols. Crystal Goomansingh reports on the damning new email that surfaced.

And in an unprecedented move, doctors in Baltimore have transplanted a genetically modified pig heart into a human being. Jackson Proskow explains what this historic operation could mean for other people waiting for organ transplants.

@Troll Bridges Hey how about you ponder the 1% mortality rate of COVID and how that's not a risk to your life. While you're at it ponder section 7 article 3.
BTW it's pretty telling of how dumb you are when you call an argument over your rights a "petty argument" if your RIGHTS are petty to you, what do you consider important?

@Gay Wizard 2 Everyone has the following fundamental freedoms:

      (a) freedom of conscience and religion... (freedom of conscience here applies)

Rights to move and gain livelihood

      (2) Every citizen of Canada and every person who has the status of a permanent resident of Canada has the right

      (a) to move to and take up residence in any province; and

      (b) to pursue the gaining of a livelihood in any province.

(these are limited to "any laws or practices of general application in force in a province" so that can maybe be interpreted to mean vaccine passports of the sort we have may be deemed lawful, but the language is somewhat unclear here)

7 Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of the person and the right not to be deprived thereof except in accordance with the principles of fundamental justice.

(this would apply to equality of access to goods and services)

12 Everyone has the right not to be subjected to any cruel and unusual treatment or punishment.

      (punitive taxes anyone?)

Provincial charters are worth examining as well.

    • Murray Flewelling
      Murray Flewelling Hace 4 días

@Mike C It is also about one group that is far less contagious and far less likely to die or kill their neighbor by accident.....Obesity lacks those components and is far more complicated than getting a shot. I laugh every time someone says even if it works people are already on shot number 3, 4 etc.....It is a good bet that anyone that is lazy enough to think like that , probably is also obese as well !!

    • Mike C

@Shawn Pitman CDC: Pfizer and Moderna boosters overwhelmingly prevent Omicron hospitalizations
Booster doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines overwhelmingly prevented hospitalizations from the Omicron variant, according to Center for Disease Control and Prevention data out Friday.
Driving the news: Pfizer and Moderna boosters were 90% effective at preventing Americans infected with the Omicron variant from ending up in the hospital, per the data.
The booster shots also reduced the likelihood of a visit to an emergency department or urgent care clinic in the first place, and were especially effective in preventing death among Americans over 50.
The big picture: The data come as the highly contagious Omicron variant rapidly spread across the country over the last month.

    • K. S.

@pixiegirl641 The whole point of the vaccine was to a) prevent people from getting seriously ill from covid, b) prevent transmission if they did get infected. Obviously they're getting sick enough to transmit it, so the vaccine isn't doing what it was supposed to. Second of all, if they're getting sick, are they really debilitated to the point where they need the military to help? It seems like enough of the community and nearby communities are functional enough to assist, so why do military resources have to be deployed here? They're needed for worst-case scenarios, and this doesn't seem to be it.

  • rodylermglez

I am pro-vaccination and even I think this is too extreme and alienating. As if money alone would solve the problem of hospitalization burden. While Canada drowned in a glass of water, in Mexico we solved the problem during Delta's surge by setting up temporary hospitals and staffing it with military's medical personnel and volunteering students of Medicine and Nursing schools. A more poorer 128.9 million population country didn't even get close to a healthcare system collapse, while a wealthy 38 million people country even had the gumption to fire its very needed medical personnel (that, yes, was putting themselves in danger by not getting vaccinated, but still).

    • Duke Dirty Work
Duke Dirty Work Hace 9 días

@rodylermglez Natural immunity that has far broader recognition of the spike and the rest of the virus has shown no benefit against infection with omicron...so no the extremely narrow resolution subunit vaccine focused on an obsolete spike will not do a damn thing for you against omicron. Further since any effect of the vex wanes to insignificant in as little as 4 months, no the T-cells are not learning but hey maybe your 10th no long term trial booster will do the trick.....

    • rodylermglez
      rodylermglez Hace 9 días

@Duke Dirty Work Not fully true. At the very least the vaccine has trained the immune system to search and recognize proteins that are similar to the spike protein and produce antigens capable of binding and neutralizing such viral proteins. It might take a bit for the T-cells to recognize what's going on but that situation beats rather having them zero knowledge about what the virus is like. If it was a fully new strain that'd be such a "zero knowledge" scenario, but this is just a cluster of mutations. The spike protein is different but not dissimilar.

    • Duke Dirty Work
Duke Dirty Work Hace 9 días

The current vex is a subunit vaccine but worse than that it's a subunit vaccine that targets the most likely to mutate part of the virus the spike protein. The Omicron "variant" has at least 36 mutations on the spike protein making the current vaccine do absolutely nothing.

Organs that may be affected by COVID-19 include:

Heart. Imaging tests taken months after recovery from COVID-19 have shown lasting damage to the heart muscle, even in people who experienced only mild COVID-19 symptoms. This may increase the risk of heart failure or other heart complications in the future.

Lungs. The type of pneumonia often associated with COVID-19 can cause long-standing damage to the tiny air sacs (alveoli) in the lungs. The resulting scar tissue can lead to long-term breathing problems.

Brain. Even in young people, COVID-19 can cause strokes, seizures and Guillain-Barre syndrome - a condition that causes temporary paralysis. COVID-19 may also increase the risk of developing Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease.

Despite rare cases of self-limited myocarditis, the benefit-risk assessment for COVID-19 vaccination shows a favorable balance for all age and sex groups; therefore, COVID-19 vaccination is currently recommended for everyone 12 years of age and older." There comes a time, however, when justice demands the suspension of freedom. Then terror, on a grand or small scale, makes its appearance to consummate the revolution. Every act of rebellion expresses a nostalgia for innocence and an appeal to the essence of being. @Troll Bridges LMAO You think it's because of Omicron? 10% of the population make up 50% of the beds. Omicron is more mild than previous variants but it isn't what keeps hospitalizations very low- that's vaccinations.
One of the highest vaccinated provinces has the LOWEST hospitalizations rate per 100,000 people, which is Newfoundland. Despite NL having one of the highest median ages and one of the highest obesity rates among Canadian provinces, they have the lowest hospitalizations.

You can also compare a province to a state with similar population size and similar timeframe of same variants spreading.
      For example
Newfoundland is 86% fully vaxxed, with just over 4,000 active cases and 4 people in the hospital. They have about 522,000 people and median age is 44 years old.
Wyoming is 47% fully vaxxed with under 4,000 active cases and 65 people in the hospital. They have about 578,000 people and median age is 37 years old.

Study very clearly shows that after 91 days the vaxxed are MORE likely to catch and get sick from omicron and delta then the unvaxxed

Read the actual study, not articles about it, look at the table in the study where it shows after 91 days the bar goes into the negative

The phone in your hand, the computer, the car you drive, the bike you ride, hot tubes, swimming pools, planes, food, camp fires, the sun. I’m being silly but I think you get the point.

    • Punky Wood
Punky Wood Hace 10 días +6

@shari because that is a tax on existing….I pay taxes all my life into a medical system…have I used that system? Not very often in the 35 years I’ve been here but I have consistently paid about 35000 in taxes a year. So that, in the event that I may need medical one day I have paid my way. We live in a caring social societyso as I was taught anyway, and those that don’t contribute as much don’t get left behind and I’m ok with that idea…this is just absolutely nonsense given the medical data in other countries. If you can’t see the numbers are being inflated and reported to make it look like anything other than consequences of cancelling millions of medical apps for the last two years and the choices pre and during the pandemic are now what we are seeing. Omicron is a very mild cold for 98% of and bad cold for the other 1.9998%.

Also the smoking tax only implemented on the act of smoking…you can’t choose to get Covid like you can’t take a vaccine that can stop the transmission. Vaccines may protect you slightly right now but that is clearly becoming harder and harder to display in the number and anyone who can objectively stand back from all this and stop blaming others for what’s going on they could see that.

The tax on cigarettes is around 6 dollar a pack multiply that by let’s say a heavy smoker 30 pack a month that’s 180 bucks a month to smoke and it’s one of the leading causes of death and probably half the people in icu right now in Canada are there for smoking. Do you think 180 bucks a month covers that cost? At the most extreme scenario?

This is illegal under the Canadian Constitution. You can’t just create laws that blatantly violate the Constitution as per section 52:

52.(1) The Constitution of Canada is the supreme law of Canada, and any law that is inconsistent with the provisions of the Constitution is, to the extent of the inconsistency, of no force or effect.”

A lawsuit in Tort needs to be launched against all Canadian officials that mandate and implement laws that violate the free conscious of the individual and their right to Life Liberty and Security of the Person. ( understood among other things as the right to bodily autonomy, consistent with Canadian medics ethics.)

@Jason Lang which has not been done to date. Justin Trudeau ironically expressed his disdain for Section 33 in an address on December 17th saying it shouldn’t exist. Meanwhile he’s violating Canadians rights even without a notwithstanding clause. Illegal. Plain and simple. Pierre Trudeau actually voted against Section 33 too but it passed by vote by a majority in the senate.
