COVID-19: Canadians divided over Quebec's proposed tax on unvaccinated

  • Quebec's proposal to tax unvaccinated people is sparking a wide range of reactions beyond the province's borders.
The plan to impose a tax on adults who choose to remain unvaccinated against COVID-19 is already being called "constitutionally vulnerable" by critics - but experts say the province is well within its rights and challenges are likely to fail.
Details about the fine are slim, but Premier Francois Legault said Tuesday the penalty would be "significant." Those with a medical exemption would be exempt from the tax.
From calls to make the tax steep, to concerns of impeding on human rights, Mike Armstrong hears what everyday Canadians are feeling.

The issue has and will always be hospital capacity and staffing shortages. Instead of solving a problem that has been around for decades, the ignorant have decided to blame a scapegoat.

@Anton Olufayo you should also know that because of Covid there's now approximately 200,000 or more people suffering with long Covid now (a debilitating and chronic illness) and that number keeps climbing everyday. All it takes is a Covid infection, even a mild one to cause it. It can happen to *anyone* vaccinated or unvaccinated, it doesn't matter. So instead of Canada providing adequate resources for a decent quality of life to these people, like it suppose to under international law, they will instead be offered assisted death as a solution. But sure our government cares deeply about people safety and well being, right?

    • happy daze 7
happy daze 7 Hace 10 meses

@Anton Olufayo they mean that its dangerous to safety of disabled people when the medical community becomes complacent with euthanizing the disabled instead of treating them. That's what they mean by promoting stereotypes that disabled peoples lives are less worth living than those of healthy people. In general attitudes just like yours are prevalent in our culture. When we first started discussing this you gave 2 options suicide or euthanasia, you never even thought about supports and allowing disabled people to live well like everyone else. That is what they are talking about. People like yourself see disabled people as disposable. They don't have to promote that attitude, it's everywhere.

It's not a debate, it's immoral. If they open the door for this, why not tax people's other life choices, someone who chooses to eat unhealthy food, or chooses not to exercise. Why shouldn't they be taxed to create an incentive to be healthier ? You could argue it would benefit everyone since those 2 things alone are proven to reduce the risks for the most common causes of death in Canada. It's crazy to see people supporting this sort of idea thinking it's good, or that the government wont abuse it once they get that type of control.

@gwanael34, weak!! The unvaccinated are not making everyone sick. Unvaccinated does not mean covid carrying. Your masters have trained you well. View all unvaccinated as unclean and disease spreading. Which arm should I sew my yellow star on?
We are also not talking about vaccines in general. We’re talking about the one that got pushed through without all of the trials being done. We’re talking about the one that they had to change the definition for vaccine for because of its ineffectiveness.

    • gwanael34
      gwanael34 Hace 10 meses

@bigsteed007 "Who are they making sick?"
      Everyone
"Do you have any issues with the protected making people sick?"
Yes that's why there are also restrictions and we still wear masks.
It's like lining up multiple slices of suisse cheese.
One layer (masks or vaccine) isn't enough and there are still holes.
Multiple layers (vaccines + masks + quarantine + restrictions) means there is no hole.
"choice to make an “unhealthy” decisions."
And my point is that you can't compare being fat or unhealthy to a transmitable disease. This is the key point here, I can't give you the fatty or smoking disease (even then we have laws to protect people from second hand smoke).
"The difference is that we have solid evidence that eating too much or smoking is not great for your health. "
As mentionned above, no that's not the difference. The difference is the transmissibility.
"There is no evidence that being vaccinated is healthy or being unvaccinated is unhealthy"
We have a century and a half odf evidence to the contrary. Vaccines have saved millions if not billions of lives.

@gwanael34, so you’re saying the unvaccinated are making people sick? Who are they making sick? The protected?
Do you have any issues with the protected making people sick?
The point being made is that if you’re going to say unvaccinated should be taxed for hospital time, then so should other people that have made the choice to make an “unhealthy” decisions.
The difference is that we have solid evidence that eating too much or smoking is not great for your health.
There is no evidence that being vaccinated is healthy or being unvaccinated is unhealthy.

    • Samuel Michaud

@Itakaification I'm not against tax money being spent on vaccines that why we pay taxes to our public health system to afford individuals such treatments the problem is when it being forced on me by coersive action imposed on my by the state. Also your argument is flawed by assuming that to have FREEDOM means we just leave people to die! Thats a rediculouse notion and you're strawmaming my argument. The best approach in therms of proper public health policy would have been to protect at risk individuals and putting all our resources toward those people while keeping the rest of society relatively free to carry on with their lives. Jayanta Bhattacharya researcher, professor of medicine and director of Stanford's center for demography and Economics of health and aging. Who is directly involved with public health policy for the us government makes this specific argument.
History has shown that when power is shifted from individual freedom to that of the collective, it typically tends to lead to horrific outcomes. This need to subvert a society away from this concept of individual liberties and freedoms is to take power away from the individual and concentrate it centralized institutions of power. In a way darwinist factors will always exert a force over humans. To control for all externalities in this way is irrational at best. This sort of thought proccess will lead to absolute tyranny where everything that makes life worth living is taken away for everyone in the name of safety. They will use fear and safety so that the state will provide you with this unending safety to keep humanity controlled for the purpose of the state and corporate apparatus . The issue is that you start going down this path their are ultimately no end to this thinking.
I hope you realize the pandemic will end one day and the freedoms you give up now will likely never be restored. We are giving up our individual power and handing it bsck to these centralized institutions of power. I simply believe the outcomes for humanity will be far more devastating than this virus ever would have been, is mine and many others concern as well. Given the past historical consequences of this sort of political action and rethoric.

    • Itakaification
      Itakaification Hace 10 meses

@Samuel Michaud I see you are quite the idealist. Lets take it the other way. Lets say I support no "Special Times" government shouldn't be able to enact policies that fringe on our charter of rights or even bother with pushing vaccines in general. Vaccine shouldn't even be free since it is take a large tax portion to supply canadians with vaccines and only a portion of it actually goes to the canadians. Instead canadians should pay for the vaccines. This way we can introduce DARWINISM, my favorite, no joke. Lets let the population decide for themselves on what is best, FREEDOM. If you make a bad choice, you die. For people with immune compromises, too bad you die regardless of what you die. Also, don't expect care or support from hospitals, since they will probably overrun and rendered a high infection zone. Also since COVID is a manufactured to test infections, it is higly mutative and infections, we can expect the mutations to continue at a more rapid and intensity than other natural viruses. Lets do that! I support it and believe you are on to something.

No one is for more tax unless it is against ultra-wealthy people who avoid paying tax altogether. If this proposed tax is about preventing increased medial costs for a population that will be largely unaffected by Covid, maybe we should start taxing polititians a percentage of the hundreds of millions they squander every year in tax payers money. I agree with "health tax".. we should also tax overweight people, because they more likely to have heart issues, diabetes, stroke, and other health related problems. Why should someone like me, who is in great shape, be denied access to hospital bed if i get into car accident, etc.., just because someone can't put away bucket of Ben&Jerry's ice cream? Or even better. Lets refuse overweight people healthcare services (there was suggestion refusing services to unvaccinated) and force them on treadmills until they shape up.. Why should my tax money be used to treat overweight, smokers, drug addicts? ..

@Mister Geopolitics Overwight people can't spread disease. However I can tell you for a fact that 90 percent of hospital admissions we have at our unit are due over weight related diseases. Majority of our "covid" patients right now are people who are considered obese. And as for smokes, the "tax" you speak of is literally 18 cents per cigarette in Ontario. That is insignificant. And speaking of cigarettes, on the last round of lockdowns, cigarette and tabbaco were deemed essential while health food stores were not and had to shut down. Imagine a pandemic that specifically effects peoples lungs, but we will make cigarettes essential but prohibit the same of products that help people stay healthy. This has never, is not and will never be about health.

@Mister Geopolitics You ever notice the way obese children tend to have obese parents? While the jury may be out on whether or not obesity is a disease, it absolutely spreads.
Now I'm going to provide you some information, and after reading it would like you to answer a question.
      - I've had Covid twice
      - Both times I got it from someone in the office I worked in
      - After the second time I told my boss "if I can't work from home then consider this my resignation." They refused, so I never went back.
      - I now work entirely from home, the few times I've been asked to attend an in-office meeting I have refused (I was even fired from a job last year due to this.)
      - Anything I need I get delivered to my house (groceries, medicine, furniture, clothes, etc.) in the garage so that I never have to come face to face with anyone.
      - Both times I had Covid I didn't need hospital care, and recovered entirely from home.
      - I haven't set a foot outside my door since May 2020. Even things like snow shoveling, and lawn care I pay people (electronically) to do for me.
My question is: "How am I a putting a strain on the healthcare system, or threatening the health of others in any way by choosing not to subject myself to an experimental drug despite practicing total physical isolation for nearly 2 years?"
Don't feel bad if you don't have an answer, I've stumped many people with this question.

@Mister Geopolitics You’re more than a bit behind on things. A lot’s happened . First, those numbers don’t add up. Trudeau said on tv when he gave his Hit ler impression that the number of unvaccinated were “very low”. So how exactly do so few in the population “overwhelm” anything? Use some common sense. There’s concerns these numbers are vaccinated from immune fatigue from successive boosters. We’re all figuring out that we’ve been lied to. You do know that everyone is now well aware that the mainstream media is nothing but a propaganda mill don’t you? You’re just parroting the government narrative. A bit embarrassing, given everyone knows about what’s going on in Israel and Denmark. In Israel; their main virologist wrote an open letter to call out the government for the failure of the vaccine push to the great harms of the people and the country. In Denmark; one of their main newspapers apologized to the country for failing to question the government narrative on the pandemic, to the great harm of the people. The news that successive boosters can result in I’m under Fatigue; a serious depression of the immune system that can even be like AIDS. A lot of us vaccinated are very upset and do not plan on boosters. And this tax looks like they want to ensure every one of us won’t be able to say no to as many as this partnership between government and pharma want to push into us. You’re way behind because all you’re getting as info is the propaganda. You need to start looking past the censored stuff. An$ Trudeau is just now trying to push through bill c4 to censor everything even more. You know, like the government will decide what you are allowed to hear or say for your ‘protection’. Funny how this whole pandemic/ vaccine pass / thing has resulted in a country a lot like China. Worse now. If we let them keep going, and we just parrot their narrative and cheer them on thoughtlessly, like you just did, we’re heading into a total itarian prison.

So, on one side we got a healthy athletic 19 years old who never used the hospital and has already natural immunity to covid. He lives on an isolated farm and didn't bother to go to the town to get vaccinated. On the other side, we got an urban drug addict who sometimes cuts himself and tends to visit the hospital on average once every week due to drug use. He's vaccinated, but due to his weaker immune system, he already spent a month in ICU with Covid. Guess which one of the 2 will have to pay extra healthcare tax in Quebec for being a burden to hospitals?

Drinking too much. Heck even people that get into sports can face injuries that require hospital care. At what people will these people end up being taxed for their life choices? People deserve care and expecting it to cost more for certain people feels discriminatory. Equal access. Equal care.

    • Lucy A
      Lucy A Hace 10 meses

Yes because that's the same as charging someone more for healthcare. Not. Tax on a product isn't the same as charging specific people more for the exact same level of care at a hospital or clinic. And adding those additional criteria around organ transplants is intended to increase the success of the transplant and ensure a longer life. They're not also charged extra on top of receiving the transplant. It's almost like there's science to back that up or something. Maybe go back to your little drawing board and come back when you find a better example.

      M V Hace 10 meses

@Erik Berard You are correct in saying the people are the problem however you are only half correct. It's both side's issues! The people give the politicians too much power, however, the politicians (corporation owners et all) have bought out whole countries governments. The politicians then go and make deals with other parties to further the agenda at hand. Do you get to vote on what laws get passed once the specific party is in "power"? No you don't. So yes you are half correct on this issue, but right now the ones who are mistreating us are the ones in charge, and are fully aware of what they are doing. The Media is also bought out by the government (government grants etc) which is bought out by the mega-corps. Right now we have more forces against us than we do for us as people. When this is all over, there will be a new type of power and a "new world" just like alot of recent movies have been trying to condition people into thinking it's okay to live in a "new world" but little does anyone know that "new world" won't be for the better of humanity, rather enslave it.

I think they should also suffer from a health tax. They clog up the hospitals. Just a small gesture like going slower on higher, using a condom or putting the Ben&Jerry ice cream away can prevent clogging of hospitals. Why should I who is healthy be denied a bed in case of a car accident because you are incapable of putting about your Ben&Jerry double chocolate ice cream?

@Isolation Years I'm aware they are heavily taxed but it's very clear that those tax dollars aren't being used appropriately either hence our health system failing miserably well before Covid. The point is smokers and the obese take up more hospital resources than pretty much any demographic and we don't stop them from doing things in society and or vilify them. Should we tax the obese, drinkers, those who play extreme sports too??? it's unacceptable and it's also unacceptable to do it against the unvaccinated, especially when the products come from company's like Pfizer or J&J for which have been proven to put profits over well being causing 100,000's of senseless deaths and injury, hence they were sued for billions for their negligence and greed. Not to mention the fact that they have a liability waiver for these vaccines which erodes trust even further. It's no wonder some are apprehensive, there is no trust!

What I am having a hard time wrapping my head around is why we ONLY speak about Vaccinations. Hospital and ICU admisions vary largley with a variety of factors that play a role into admissions. We have already seen that the Vaccines dont prevent the transmission of COVID, so, If we are doing this only to target hospital cappacity issues why are we not also focusing on age, weight, and overall health. The data is clear that Vaccines do prevent hospitalizations at a much higher rate however I believe as a 25 or 30 year old in generally good health you are inherently a very low risk and if you are in good health you have given yourself the luxury of making the choice as what you can or cannot put into your body. Lets stop painting COVID as Vaccinated vs Unvaccinated. It is far more complex than that.

A little off-topic, but prior to the age of COVID-19, among other illnesses/diseases, I always felt like the Flu/Influenza did not receive the attention it deserved. It was as if it was 'acceptable' to have so many people become infected with this virus without taking (much) better action/protection to reduce the spreading/transmission rate during principally October-April in the Northern Hemisphere. The most that would be seen during and beforehand are commercials displaying what medications one should turn to if becoming infected, and while the Flu shot was available, it was not significantly encouraged to this degree. For me, those colder months were always a time to feel vulnerable for and fearful of being infected, notably in crowded settings. The fear of becoming sick and passing it to those around me are what bothered me most. Although COVID-19 transmits much more efficiently and is deadlier, I feel like the Flu (and its strains) is deadly enough to warrant more attention. I suspect that it might be treated a bit differently, though, post-COVID-19 (whenever that may be).
On a side note, I am also a little surprised by the degree to which school re-openings were prioritized over the course of this pandemic, especially during times like this.
